10 Gigabit Ethernet is the latest development of Ethernet, the most popular technology today for local area networking. Ethernet has experienced multiple improvements over the past 25 years, going from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet) and recently to 1 Gbps (GbE). Today, a 10 Gbps Ethernet (10 GbE) is being developed to meet the increasing bandwidth needs of the LAN market and to take Ethernet out into the storage, metro and wide-area networks. The migration to 10 Gbps Ethernet is an economically viable path since it uses the same frame format as 10M/100M/1G Ethernet. This allows the leveraging of existing, ubiquitous Ethernet installations, the Ethernet management tools and the people already trained in Ethernet. Ultimately 10 Gbps provides a solution with easy integration and low cost of ownership.
